"I hurt my neck in a minor car
accident. I was suffering from mild whiplash with reduced
mobility of the left side. My medical doctor referred me to
physical therapy, which reduced the pain but not the everyday
stiffness and tension headaches. To complicate the injury,
I carry my stress in my shoulders, which tightened the muscles
that were trying to heal. When I mentioned starting yoga to
my physical therapist, he encouraged me to go as a means to
strengthen my back, which would take the pressure off the
muscles in my neck. Anthony's classes provided so much more.
I learned through postures and relaxation methods to let go
of the tension in my shoulders, which enabled my neck to heal.
I also learned to listen to my body and recognize what it
needed, feeling the difference between the pain from a stressful
day and the pain from the injury. Today my neck is fully recovered.
Without the ability to relax that I learned through yoga,
I know I would still be suffering from a slow, painful recovery.
I've been attending yoga classes at the OM Yoga Studio for
about 4 months. The classes have taught me to how to be aware
of and feel balanced in my body. I recently decided to try
climbing at an indoor climbing gym. At first, I was a little
intimidated as I watched experienced climbers move gracefully
up the walls. However, once I got on the wall, I found that
I knew my body was capable of moving my foot up to a hold
situated at shoulder height. I also have an awareness of my
balance on the wall, knowing if I have a good handhold to
make certain moves or if I need to adjust my body first. Had
I tried climbing before I started yoga, my experience would
have been drastically different. While yoga has strengthened
my body, the understanding and acceptance of myself and my
body is the greater benefit."
